There was born a prince in the Kingdom of Forever and when he was just a young lad, he decided that he wanted to become a knight. There was a tavern located at the edge of the Kingdom of Forever on Knights Circle. This is where they would gather every fortnight. As the stories were being swapped, they would laugh, sing, and drink beer while they exchanged exciting tales. Every fortnight the little prince would wait until his parents went to bed and he would sneak out the window and run all the way to the tavern. He sat at the feet of the knights and always listened to them tell stories of their slaying dragons. They told tales of saving maidens from the dangers of living in a castle and being promised in marriage to a wicked man that she didn’t love. They said that these maidens were always thankful, and never were sure how to repay these knights. They would say one to another, “I told her that I knew how she could repay me,” they nudged one another with an elbow, and then they all would wink at the little prince and laugh.
The wide-eyed little prince would sit at their feet, listen intently, and take these stories to heart. Little did the young prince know that these knights in their armor embellished their tales more than a little. Even though children were not allowed in the tavern, nothing was ever said about the prince being there since he was the king and queen’s child, no one said a thing about it. For each fortnight, the little prince would sit by their feet and listen to these exciting stories; watching them laugh and nudge at each other.
When he graduated from school, he sat his majestic parents down and told them he had something to tell them. He began to explain that he wanted to go to night school to become a knight and slay dragons. He told them that ever since he was just a little boy he had dreamed about being a knight in shining armor and riding a white horse.
His father the king and his mother the queen were just beside themselves and cared not that their young prince wanted to be a part of that drinking and storytelling bunch of knights that they knew to be drunkards. They tried to talk the prince out of this nonsense to no avail. So when the next full moon came upon them they decided to let their young son go to night school. After he went to night school, perhaps he would not want to become a knight after all because the school was highly disciplined and terribly difficult and their prince would not want to stick with it so they thought.
So, off he went to the finest night school in the entire Kingdom of Forever. He did find it difficult to become a knight, but the stories that those knights told as he sat at their feet when he was just a boy; burned in his heart and this desire spurred him onward. He finally finished night school and wanted his parents to come to graduation for he had worked so hard to finish. He wanted them to see him in his new shining armor outfit. Of course they did come for how could they miss their only son’s graduation from night school and be the first to see him in his new shining armor.
The graduation ceremony began. The prince had not told his parents that he was the valedictorian of his class. They watched him take the podium to give his speech. They looked at each other in surprise and felt their hearts just fill with pride. When the night school ceremony finished, each was handed their very own shining armor and then told they could go out and choose their horse from the ones in the pen. The prince saw one that he fell in love with. It was a pure white horse with a long white mane. This horse took a shine to the prince too, so it was a perfect match. Then they should choose the colors that their horse would be forever dressed in.
The prince’s favorite colors were white and yellow; lo and behold, there was one horse outfit that was white and yellow with gold trim so he chose those colors that he would proudly dress his horse in each time he rode out to slay a dragon. When they all were gathered back together in the auditorium, there were snacks being served so he grabbed some and went to find his parents. When they had finished their snacks, the new knights were told they could try on their new shining armor to make sure that it fit. They all were just buzzing and congratulating each other and complimenting each on how good they looked in their new shining armor. It had been a long exhausting evening, and they all took their diplomas, their new shining armor, lance, and helmet and meandered to their brightly dressed horses.
The newly graduated prince asked his parents if they would mind taking his helmet and lance home with them so he could go celebrate with his friends. They didn’t mind taking them home but told him not to stay out too late. It was Friday evening and his first assignment on Monday would come soon enough. He did as his parents asked him to do and went home early. Into bed he crawled, even though he was still excited about being a knight now. He couldn’t wait until morning when his parents would be up and ask them how they like his shining armor in the daylight. They were excited for him but couldn’t help but worry about the danger he would be in once he got on the job. They asked him what new knight name he was going to choose.
He thought that he would choose Sir Lancelot or Galahad. They told him they were sorry, but those names were already taken. He couldn’t hide his disappointment, but said he would choose something else. He reluctantly said I’ll just go by Sir Robin then.
After they finished their breakfast, he took a ride out in the country to try out his shining armor. Before he knew it, he rode out of the Kingdom of Forever and into the Kingdom of Dark Clouds. He heard someone calling for help. Alas, my first maiden I may rescue, oh boy am I lucky to find one the first day, and I wasn’t even looking for one. He saw a young maiden running away from the castle, he rode gallantly toward her and with one fell swoop, he scooped her up into his arms and sat her on his white horse in front of him. He saw why she was running away. There was a black knight from the Kingdom of the Dark Clouds chasing her on his black horse.
The prince rode on tenaciously and felt her whole body begin to shake. He held on to his maiden firmly and whispered in her ear “Hold on to me my love, for I will not let anyone ever hurt you again.” When she began to fall, the prince pulled her back in close to him and whispered once again in her ear, “Trust me my love, for I will never betray you or leave you.” When they were out of the Kingdom of Dark Clouds; he stopped his white horse, dismounted then lifted her down gently to the ground. He asked her name, and she said Princess Pauline. That is how Sir Robin met his Princess and vice-versa.
He took off his helmet and breastplate then whispered in her ear once more, “Let me put my words on your lips.” …
